Can anyone be hypnotized?

In a word, yes. Hypnosis is just a relaxed state of mind where your subconscious mind, your inner mind, is in control of your waking mind, your conscious mind, and your body. For instance, your subconscious is like your autonomic nervous system, your heart, and lungs. They keep working even when you are asleep or not thinking about them. So, your subconscious mind does the same thing for your conscious mind. For example, you always know right from wrong, good from bad, what you like and dislike without ever thinking about it. This comes from your subconscious.

So, in hypnosis, when you want to stop smoking, something your body and your conscious mind is addicted to, we help you train your subconscious into a new habit. This new habit believes you do not want to smoke, which is your new desire.

A hypnotic trance is just a very relaxed state of mind that allows your subconscious mind to listen to suggestions for the changes you want to make in your life. People enter that level of consciousness many times all day long. For instance, daydreaming or “zoning out” is a form of trance. Your mind is just relaxing. In hypnosis, we put you into the trance with gentle words, music, and sometimes inaudible sounds to get you to relax. Then the recording you are listening to or the hypnotherapist makes suggestions to help you stop smoking, lose weight, forget emotional traumas or whatever your goal might be.

Essentially no, all trances are just your mind settling into a certain brain wave pattern that is very relaxing. There are several different types of brain waves, your mind moves you into and out of them all the time to rest your body, to energize your mind or for intense thinking. The alpha state is the most restful and allows your subconscious mind to be more susceptible to suggestions for positive behavior changes than any other level. This is the level we strive to give you in self-hypnosis.

Many years ago, when hypnosis was first introduced the term “sleep” was used to designate a trance. Unfortunately, it is a poor choice of words. For instance, in surgery, the anesthesia used to sedate you is referred to as sleeping. In fact, you are sedated. If you were asleep, you could be awakened. But in surgery you cannot be awakened until the anesthesia is turned off.

In a hypnotic trance you are not asleep either. Your subconscious mind is simply more active than your conscious mind. So you remember everything that happens, you are still yourself, you still have your own willpower, but you are more relaxed and focusing on the hypnotherapy.
