Many people say they are afraid to fly.
But it’s a bit of a catch-all term. For example, when I was young, I wanted to be a pilot. I took flying lessons, went to ground school, soloed in several aircraft, even did a solo cross-country flight as a license requirement. Due to finances, I never got my license, but I loved flying and the training. However, today I don’t fly anywhere. Am I afraid to fly, well, yes. But why? I understand the aircraft, the physics, I’m not afraid of heights, yet it all bothers me. The reason is, there are many components to ‘flying.’
For me, I loathe the TSA procedures, removing my shoes and some clothes and redressing in public without even a chair. I hate having my personal luggage picked through and then I hate the whole baggage claiming circus. And on the aircraft, well, it’s like cattle now. Lastly, there’s the way the airlines schedule and cancel flights on a whim. So, I ‘fear’ somewhat for safety, but more for my sanity and emotional health. It’s just not a good experience.
Are there workarounds? Yes, there are special TSA programs to relieve the security lines. But I will still get bad food and lost luggage. No matter how many little fixes they make, they have still lost me as a customer because I fear ‘the system’ is going to ruin my trip. Through no fault of my own I may end up duct-taped to my seat.
Maybe my fears of flying are a little exotic. But I cannot imagine anyone likes the things listed above. Hopefully your flying fears are more fundamental issues like safety, altitude, and claustrophobia. In fact we have a good article on claustrophobia fear. Either way, our program can help you with all of these. Checkout our program Self Hypnosis to Stop Fear of Flying for a permanent solution. And read a great reference on Fear of Flying.
